Memorial Day: Manhattan Style
One of the things that makes a Manhattan Memorial Day Weekend so memorable is the wealth of choice offered to resident New Yorkers. Regardless of what might fit your fancy, you’re likely to find it somewhere on the island. Here are a few to get you pointed in the right direction.
Get Patriotic With Fleet Week
There’s no better time for patriotic displays than Memorial Day Weekend, and New York’s Fleet Week provides the opportunity for exactly that. The week-long extravaganza begins on May 23rd and lasts until May 29th, and includes a range of fun sights/activities:
“Every year, the weeklong bash starts with the Parade of Ships—a flotilla of visiting vessels and tall ships that cruise along the Hudson river—and continues with military demonstrations, a Memorial Day ceremony and more outstanding things to do around town.”
In Manhattan, specifically, you’ll be able to see some of the action unfold down at Pier 92.
See the Artists Work Their Magic at the Washington Square Outdoor Art Exhibit
There’s nothing quite like watching an artist execute their craft. The Washington Square Outdoor Art Exhibit will be the place to see talented artists display their skills and sell their wares, and the Spring Show happens to take place Memorial Day Weekend: May 26th, 27th, and 28th.
Keep in mind that the showing doesn’t actually take place in Washington Square Park. Rather, you’ll be able to catch the action on University Place at East 13th Street.
This location harkens back to the time when the Village was the epicenter of creativity, with paintings, sculptures, photography and more all present in one form or another.
Enjoy the Orchestra at the Annual Free Memorial Day Concert
It’s hard to top free and fun. The Annual Free Memorial Day Concert, taking place at the Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine will be a chance to enjoy a free one-hour concert courtesy of the New York Philharmonic Orchestra.
Seating is first come first serve, so you’ll do well to get yourself down to the church right at 6:00PM to secure a spot. The program will include Vaughan Williams’ Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis and Saint-Saëns’ Organ Symphony.
See the Masters of the Stage and Screen at the Lower East Side Festival of the Arts
Presented by the Theater for the New City, Memorial Day Weekend’s Lower East Side Festival of the Arts will include a bevy of dance, theater, film, music, comedy, and art, all presented free, and brought to you by some of New York City’s most talented emerging artists. There will be multiple events, all of which you are welcome to attend, and with any luck you’ll find some newfound appreciation for some of the city’s up-and-comers.
On Saturday, for instance, you can head to the street fair on East 10th Street, where you’ll find delicious food, accompanied by the wares of loca merchants and live performances from musicians, poets, and performance artists. For an idea of what’s in store, be sure to take a look at this clip from a previous year’s festivities.
Mingle at the Memorial Day Weekend Singles Party
If you happen to find yourself single during Memorial Day Weekend, as many of us do, you can hunt down the cure for loneliness at the Memorial Day Weekend Singles Party.
Just head on over to Slate on West 21st Street, and you too can join the hundreds of other singles reveling in the joys of the live DJ music, cash bar, and complimentary appetizers. There will be fun ice breakers to get the conversations going and even prizes distributed to lucky guests, so a good time is all but guaranteed.
Boogie Down on the Memorial Day Weekend Dance Cruise
If you feel like getting your dance on while simultaneously enjoying the sights of the Hudson River, the Memorial Day Weekend Dance Cruise is the event for you:
“Set sail for a three-hour late-night dance party on the Hudson with music, views and booze galore. DJ Tony Tone will be spinning a mix of Top 40, house, rock, hip-hop, Latin and more on three levels, and you'll be dazzled by the sight of the sparkling New York skyline.”
Those sights will include the Statue of Liberty and New York City’s other well-known landmarks. You’ll set out on the Hornblower Serenity Yacht, and, in addition to the sightseeing, will have the chance to indulge in the cash bar, dinner buffet, and other fine perks the gorgeous vessel has planned.
