    The Winter Antiques Show

    January 12, 2019

New York City is vibrant hub of diversity laden with rich tastes of art and culture. Walk down any block and you’ll find yourself face to face with various forms of artistic creation from graffiti benefiting low-income youth to the prim de la prim of fashion designs and sculpture. From your home in the Upper East Side apartments, the bulk of Manhattan’s visionary creations are yours to explore.

There are several shows and galleries opening their doors this January, but one of particular interest to many is The Winter Antiques Show. Whether this event is on your radar or not, it’s worth looking into given its prestigious status. Here’s everything you need to know before attending.

What Is The Winter Antiques Show?

This antique show takes place every winter right in the coveted Upper East Side area at the Park Avenue Armory. Its vast collection features everything from Roman antiquities to Mid-Century Modern items, making it one of the most extensive assemblages of the past this side of the country. Expect to see pristine condition wares in the stylings of:

    • Americana
    • Old English
    • European
    • Asian
    • and rare finds from historical sites up to 5,000 years old
    • The walkways within the armory will also be lined with decorative arts from these various cultures, providing an extra layer of depth to the civilizations and times they were created in. High class and ever elegant, New York’s finest collectors are always in attendance.

    Benefiting the Cause

Sales made benefit the East Side House Settlement, a charity and community resource in the South Bronx dedicated to providing both social and educational services to those in need. Highly accredited and actionable, East Side House partners with schools and community centers to bring quality resources to residents of the Bronx as well as Northern Manhattan.

Their commitments and hard work have helped over 10,000 individuals improve their lives through programs ranging from literacy education to specialized training in technological fields. This is an excellent opportunity to own a piece of history while making a positive impact on someone else’s life.

    Location, Time, and Date

The Winter Antiques Show takes place every day from January 18th to the 27th. Doors are open daily from 12 to 8 p.m., except for Sunday and Thursday when the show closes at 6 p.m. Tuesday also has reduced hours, closing the doors at 4:30 p.m.

There will be an opening night party on the 17th to celebrate another year of this successful antiques show. Expect hors d’oeuvres, drinks, and a speech or two to commemorate the successful union between The Winter Show and East Side House. All proceeds from the party will also benefit the charity.

The location for this event is the historic Park Avenue Armory, located at 643 Park Avenue. This palace-like industrial shed has dedicated its space to supporting unconventional works in visual, performance, and other art forms since 2007, but the building itself dates back to its construction in 1881 with the most intact 19th century interiors to survive in one building. With 55,000 square feet of space to offer, it makes the perfect home for The Winter Antiques Show.

    Accessibility, Safety, and Food

Wheelchair access is available on the East 66th Street entrance of the building, which is also an excellent location for those with baby strollers to enter. Keep in mind that strollers are nor permitted on the weekends due to large crowd sizes, whose close quarters could create an unsafe environment for a child.

All bags, purses, backpacks and other similar items will be checked by security. Items deemed too large by the security crew will also be checked at the door. While that’s hardly a problem, it’s nice to know beforehand.

Finally, there is a café open on the show floor catered by Canard. If you’ve never tasted Canard’s exquisite creations before, then you’re in for a real treat. Expect food items like fluffy spinach bites, filet of beef carpaccio with truffle vinaigrette, and Earl Grey white chocolate mousse in nothing short of the most masterfully crafted bite-sized dishes.

    Minds Behind the Show

The Winter Show remains the leading art, antiques and design fair in America thanks to the tireless work of 70 world-leading experts in fine and decorative arts. Each object at the fair passes rigorous vetting by a committee of 150 experts from both the US and Europe who check for authenticity, date, and condition. Lead chairs for the show are comprised of:

    • Frank De Biasi
    • Victoria Hagan
    • John B. Murray
    • Fran O’Brien Chubb
    • Lucinda C. Ballard
    • Michael R. Lynch
    • Arie L. Kopelman
    • Courtney Booth Christensen
    • Wendy Holmes
    • and Helen Frech Kippax

Both the associate and executive directors can be contacted for further information about the show or collection through the phone numbers or email addresses listed on The Winter Show’s website.
